Torleif Lie is a Norwegian artist who uses the medium of photography to convey his deep admiration and personal connections to the stunning landscapes he encounters around the world, including the regions devastated by human interference, namely extreme pollution or over visitation. His photographs expose and reveal both the beauty of the environment as well as its fragility within a connected world with its rampant and unrestrained affinity for raw materials.
Torleif’s images are a form of self-portraiture by proxy; his physical presence may be invisible on the surface of his very large prints, yet he is an integral part of each photograph as he conveys his deep emotional attachment to each place and culture carefully captured for our reflective experience. With impeccable technique his images prompts the viewer to reflect emotionally and visually upon the immense beauty of the world and our role as caretakers of an endangered planet.
STATEMENT
As an artist I am compelled to create images that provoke an experiential reaction from the viewers, but also to reveal the fragility and grandiose nature of landscapes; I aim to capture a mixture of the sublime together with the fragility of the environment at the hands of human exploitation.
My work is celebratory by design and creates an intimate storyline with the underlying message that beauty can only be comprehended with the contrast of decay or destruction. I aim to pose questions, to reveal both beauty and loss.
