"This photograph was part of a series I did that explored the innocent play and curiosity of children from a time before video games. My goal was to photograph situations that many of us could remember and relate to from our childhood. It was important to me to reduce the visual weight of the subject by various means so that that it wasn't simply a photograph of someone you didn't know. I wanted it to be a series of photographs the viewer could put themselves into that might invoke a memory. To achieve this the main subject was either blurred, small, obscured, not looking at the camera, or what ever I could come up with to make them secondary to the story I was trying to portray. I actually shot this at a lake that I have been going to all my life and remember exactly how this feels skimming across the mirror still lake first thing in the morning."
